Baz Luhrmann, has always stamped his films with the loud and flamboyant treatment; not only into his script but also in his characters. And that is what he exactly does with his novel adaptation.
The 2013 film The Great Gatsby is an adaptation of the novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Set in the 1920's, the film was co-written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, andElizabeth Debicki.It follows the life and times of millionaire Jay Gatsby and his neighbor Nick, who recounts his encounter with Gatsby at the height of the Roaring Twenties.
This 3D movie was huge success at the box office, with the critics and Fitzgerald's granddaughter praising the film. At the 86th Academy Awards, it was nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, winning both.
The story follows in true Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922. This was the era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks.
Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby ( played by the utterly marvelous Leonardo DiCaprio), and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan), and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan(Joel Edgerton).
It is from here the story picks up pace and shows how Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without of the world he inhabits, he weaves a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
The film with its flamboyance and decadence will have the audience wanting more.The great American life is even more evident here.The style and alexandra daddario series list the production are top class, reflecting in the work and style of the director.
Leonardo di Caprio does great justice to the role. He has known to take over a variety of iconic roles all trough his career. In this film he proves why he is the best bet to pay the iconic character of 'Gatsby'.
Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan, both do justice to their roles in this lavish and CGI laced film.
